Upon the Passing of Jim Harrison
the birds stopped talking today
the weather eroded a great soul away
and all the wine turned back to water
the look of an eye can move rivers,
lift skirts, and hold a broken life together
just be careful where you point it
the trees swayed inside his coarse voice
fish darted upstream in his veins
the sun set every night behind his eye
the pot bubbled beneath the lid
flesh from bone soul from body
i have been reduced
the birds stopped singing today
the weather is turning to spring
and the rivers are running red
